Should I seal joints on my laminate floor?

Should I seal joints on my laminate floor?Traffic Master Baltic Oak laminate flooring
Great question John. Most joints on laminate floors do not need to be sealed. The way they are designed keeps the floors tightly together so there is no worry about sealing the laminate. We do like to take extra precaution when installing laminate flooring in moist places such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Silicon sealant should be used in expansion zones in bathrooms, near kitchen sinks, dishwashers and refrigerators with ice makers. If there is going to be expansion due to excess moisture, then using a silicone sealer such as the Shaw Silicone Sealant is a good idea.

The Shaw Color Sealant can be matched to your laminate flooring and if done right will be tough to be seen. If you install your floor correctly you will have many years of happy walking.

Here is what Shaw’s laminate sealant says:

  • Seals joints which may be vulnerable to moisture
  • Finishes expansion space around door facings or any vertical surface
  • Prevents water penetration underneath planks in wet areas
  • Sealant will not affect expansion of the Hardsurface flooring

Should I Float or Glue my Trafficmaster Floor?

Find Trafficmaster Flooring

We are installing Traffic Master Engineered Hardwood Flooring. Are we supposed to use glue and if so, what kind/type of glue?

Can this be used as a floating floor without glue?

I personally have glued this product down and it looks and performs fantastic. It is currently 2 years old and looks like the day we installed it.

I remember the box shows directions for gluing it down, but I have heard of people floating it and believe that is is advertised as a floating floor.

We used the standard glue available from Home Depot on the floor we put down. We bought quite a bit of it and did a great job putting it down. I highly recommend gluing it down as it makes it feel extremely solid.

To enable to install laminate flooring properly, you will need some accessories for a successful installation. Accessories like glue, pipe collars, under lay and the like but not all are needed some can be created at home with simple materials. Manufacturers of laminate flooring usually create their own laminate flooring accessories. It is recommended that you use one brand of laminate flooring accessories for the reason that it will result to a consistent color and pattern.

Choosing the right laminate flooring underlay will depend on the sub-floor and other environmental considerations like noise.

Different kind of laminate flooring underlay:

Pipe collars are useful when installing laminate flooring around pipes and make sure that there is an extension gap around the pipes.

In case the laminate flooring incurs small or tiny scratches sealants and repair kits can fix the problem. Sealants usually are made of acrylic that allows particular amount of movement. And it comes in different colors to match the floor which is also the same with repair kits.

I Need Trafficmaster Flooring

I am looking for Trafficmaster is something I hear on this flooring website hundreds of times each week. Trafficmaster Allure Review and Picture It seems that Home Depot regularly closes our their various types of Trafficmaster and bring in other colors.

The problem with Home Depot switching what they carry is when people start a floor and don’t finish it for a few weeks or months. When they get close to finish it they notice they didn’t get enough boxes of Trafficmaster from the store.

The happy installer heads back to Home Depot to pick up a few boxes to complete their floor installation. When they arrive at the store they are smacked with the reality they can’t get the color of flooring that they have already installed 90%!! [Read more…]

Install Laminate Flooring on Stairs

D. Mason asks Can I Install Laminate Flooring on Stairs?:

Install Laminate Flooring on Stairs

Installing Laminate Flooring on Stairs

I am installing traficmaster flooring at my entry above the stairs and in my basement. I want to install it on my stairs.

Can I glue Trafficmaster down to the stairs? responds:

Normally we avoid installing Trafficmaster (laminate flooring) and engineered flooring on stairs. We stay away from this due to the high cost of moldings and trim as well as the safety factor of the slick laminate flooring.

We are seeing more often and some laminate flooring manufacturers are creating some molding that makes it easier and more cost effective to use laminate flooring on stairs.

What I don’t advise installing laminate flooring on stairs due to safety because laminate flooring tend to be slicker than many other types of flooring.

So yes it can be installed, but normally I would recommend going with hardwood, carpet, or at least installing a runner.
I have seen Trafficmaster glued down and it definitely worked. In this application it of course would be advised to be glued down.

Laminate Flooring including Trafficmaster can be used on stairs. It can be tricky to install but it can be done if you plan ahead. Plan ahead, get the proper tools, and proper flooring including edges, glue, saw, and other tools necessary for a tight fit such as a stairwell.

Be prepared that an install of laminate flooring in a stair case can take much longer than a standard laminate flooring install. Take your time, prepare, prepare some more, and then think about it some more. When you get started you will be glad you put the time in. The end results are quite good if you take the time and do it right.
