Last week I installed an engineered wood in my own home. I put the Thomasville Engineered Hardwood. I love this stuff, the warranty is good, and it has a great look.
Often readers of this flooring site ask me what I put, so here you go. I love this Thomasville Engineered hardwood. I picked the walnut because the dark color has amazing eye-catching beauty.
Looking for discontinued Thomasville flooring? Check the links above and on the side for discontinued laminate flooring.
Update 2020 –
I still love this flooring. It is now over 13 years old and this Thomasville flooring is going strong. It has a bit more added character but has been money well spent. What a great investment!

I need two boxes of Thomasville Flooring, horizontal cut, 22.79 sq ft/carton, size 1/2 inch thick by 5 inch width by varied lengths of 48 inch, 36 inch, 24 inch, and 12 inch. The isbn number is 4 897016 690020. Can anyone steer me toward two boxes? I got no help from Home Depot and Thomasville. Sapale mahagony or brazilian cherry.
Thanks for your help,

Engineered Wood says
The benefits of using engineered wood floors include more resistance to higher moisture levels than solid wood flooring, which adds to their appeal to use in damp basements or in regions of the country that have higher relative humidity levels.

Yes, it’s true… Same story here as Jethro’s comments. I purchased the Thomasville Brazillian Cherry from Home Depot, and had it installed in my master bedoom in late 2008. I bought enough to do my entire house which is 2100 sq. ft. Luckily, for me I only installed in my master bedroom. This flooring is way way way too soft. The lightest & slightest thing will dent, ding, or scratch this flooring. My office chair with plastic casters left lines & slight grooves in the floor. And, yes, its definitely not easy to keep clean…. but, the dents & scratches are more of an issue. I saved the remainder of the flooring for when I sell my home. I do not RECOMMEND buying this flooring PERIOD!

I’ve had decent success in my bedroom, but wanted to do the rest of the house. It doesn’t appear they make it anymore. Can anyone confirm. Thanks.

Hello,
Just wanted to update my post above.
The Windex that I originally used “Lavanda” is no longer available.
http://bit.ly/qJQwx5
They have a new product, Vinegar, that works just as good.
http://bit.ly/qYqw04
Windex is so far the best product I have found to clean this floor and not leave streaks.
So far so good. I have cleaned my floor with Windex twice already. Floor looks brand new.
I was difficult to do the hands and knees scrubbing, but so worth it.
I used a few rolls of paper towels and a bottle or two of Windex Multi-Surface Lavanda and Windex Multi Surface Vinegar.
It’s great for spot cleaning too.
To do a full clean now, I just vacuum, and then use a micro fiber mop and my bottle of Windex Multi-Surface Vinegar. After Vacuum, I spray a little area, mop and move on.
Like I mentioned above, and Jami figured out, the smudges are coming from the wax build up from the store bought floor cleaners. I won’t use them again.
Whatever they coat this Thomasville Walnut Floor with at the factory is some heavy duty stuff.
Next I am going to post photos of my floor.
🙂

I have the Thomasville Walnut flooring in entire 1408 sqft home, with the exception of two bathrooms. My flooring was installed in 10/09.
I am writing to comment about the smudges on this flooring.
Since 10/09 I have been using a Commercial Floor Cleaner, by Pledge, from Home Depot. It makes my flooring looks great, right after I use it.
I would first vacuum with my Dyson DC25. After that I would use a Microfiber Mop and the Pledge Commercial Cleaner.
To not create streaks I would have to spray a ton of this Cleaner. I would spray in small area, probably 5 sq ft. Then I would mop this area with the microfiber mop. If the mop starting to dry up at all, there would be streaks.
It is a long process to do the whole house, but I like the look.
Once I was done, you could never walk on this floor without House Sandals. Up until a week ago, I have never walked on this floor without Sandals.
If you walked on it with bare feet, or with slightly damp socks, let the smudges begin. This would drive me nuts.
Luckily it is only my girlfriend and I living in the home.
Getting to my discovery.
Due to time constraints / budget at the time of the install, I used craigslist to find an installer. Mistake. They floated my whole house, and did it incorrectly.
What ended up happening is the floor boards would separate, some worse than others. The installer told me that I should put on athletic shoes and just kick the boards back together. That was his solution. That is another story though. Get references. Again, time / budget.
A good friend of mine, whom wasn’t available at the time of my install, said he would rip it up and glue it down. I went with this and am so happy with how it is turning out. My boards looks perfect.
He got glue on some of the tops of the boards and ensured me that he would clean it after the job was completed.
He has since cleaned up the glue using a thinner. I thought it would be a little harsh, but it had no effect on my wood, probably because of all the layers of Wax (from commercial pledge).
My place did stink for a few days and I had a nice buzz.
I took Jami’s (above) advice. I ordered the holy cow concentrated cleaner from Amazon.
I tried a spot on the floor where the thinner had already been used. It cleaned up the floor nicely. I spilled a few drops of water in this spot and wiped it with a rag. It cleaned up like a champ.
This would never happen in the past. If I spilled any water it looked like living hell smudges and I would have to get the pledge and mop just to get it back to normal.
In this same spot, I did the footprint test and nothing showed up.
I also went out for the day, came how and tried the damp sock and no smudge marks.
That night I got on my hands and knees and started doing the floor. The holy cow cleaner seemed like it was making some smudge marks and I almost gave up.
I tried the same method Jami says, spray and wait a few minutes, but the same thing was happening, small smudge marks. I almost went crazy but then figured let me go clean my bathroom and come back to this.
I grabbed my Windex Multi-Surface Lavender cleaner to head to the bathroom. I accidently spilled some on my wood floor and quickly cleaned it up. I noticed how easy it was and no smudges.
I tried another area and it worked great.
I did the water test, footprint test, and damp sock test, in a small area and no smudges!
I ended up doing my entire floor and it looks fantastic.
So far so good.
Sorry for the long story, but I had to get it all in there.
Try it. Maybe it will work for you.
I now invite people over, rather than dreading cleaning up after they leave. :-).

Alek, I feel your pain on redoing the floor. Everytime it seemed it went into HD our brazilian cherry floor was there, never a second thought about it. Although this has been a complete cleaning and caring nightmare we had one bedroom left I could not afford at the time to when it was installed in 09. I had 2 1/2 boxes left from the original install and had pulled up the flooring in the one bedroom to paint and do the floor for the new baby on its way. I run up to HD and the Brazilian Cherry had been discontinued and I was short 4 boxes….and wanted it to flow into the bedroom from the hall without using those tacky T strips under the door….i was upset and was going to put carpet in…I went up to HD and was told they were clearancing their Thomasville 1/2×5″ Cinamon for $0.99ft…it was a very close match and was able to mix it in with the other i had, although darker than the brazilian cherry it worked out….so keep your eye out as their are 2 others on clearance now and according to HD there will be no more Thomasville Flooring…so grab what you can if you need a match…i got lucky by the slimmest of margins as it sold out 2 days after I ordered what I needed…Good Luck….

We had a laminant floor in the home we bought and never had a second thought about the floor. However, we decided to install a hardwood floor and picked Thomasville Brazillian Cherry as it was gorgeous in store and sample seemed durable. We purchased from the HomeDepot and their contractors installed it throughout our first floor with the exception of the kitchen, breakfast and baths around 2,000SF and they did a wonderful job, I highly recommend HomeDepot. However, I do not recommend this floor it has changed the way we live. This wood floor shows every dust particle, every hair, every fiber etc and must be cleaned once a day at the minimum or the floor looks horribly dusty/dirty. The worst part is the durability, it has none. Plastic remotes controls falling off the armchair cause dents/scratches, dropping quarters causes dents/scratches, dropping utensiles in dinning room causes dents, keys falling from ones pocket causes dents and scratches you get the hint, EVERYTHING causes dents and scratches. The floor now looks like a roller rink with all the dents and scratches and its only 2 Years Old!!!! We had to put pads on everything, tv trays, all the furniture, walk in socks or barefeet only and heaven forbid you might drop something even small on the floor as it will dent or leave a scratch. This floor would be good for those flipping houses that can install them in empty homes as its beautiful, but if you are putting this in your own home and plan to actually live in your house and use the floors you just created your own nightmare….you will hate this floor after a short time…..Be Careful What You Wish For, It Might Come True!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, I do not recommend this product.

Hi guys! This is my second post! I have called, emailed, and dealt with Home Depot and Thomasville. They had just sent an inspector to our house a few weeks ago. The results…..”It is because of the lighting in my house….and the floors being DARK, and the chemicals from my OTHER floors tracking on to the wood” LOL! Chemicals from my ceramic floors, tracking ALL Over 600 sq ft of the wood floors? and from week one?! I even sent a piece of extra wood off with the inspector. Mind you this piece had never even seen the ight of day, and already had my finger prints on it just from handing it over! I am getting my OWN inspector, and sending pictures of the extra wood I have that I have been walking on in a separate room, with NO CLEANERS! I will also send every review I can find online about this flooring. I just think its a joke. We pay good money to bring the value of our home up, and only to have it all go to waste. Wish me luck, I will keep on posting with any luck or disappointments that come my way with this to try and help anyone else that is having this issue.
Jami says
To update an earlier post, we still use the vinegar/water solution and it works wonderfully. We have the bona mop (dumped out the pre-mixed solution and did our own water/vinegar solution) I have the mop hanging in the closet and we will just spot clean when we see fit and do a total floor clean about once a week or two. If we do the spot cleaning there is really no need for constant total floor cleaning. It takes only a few minutes for this to dry and then we can walk on the floor. It dries very, very fast and there are absolutely zero footprints. We do have 3 cleaning pads that we rotate out about every 200square feet or so depending on how dirty the floor is. We have many other cleaners downstairs but I hesitate to use them because this is going so great and is extremely cost effective. No other product will dry without leaving a residue behind. Sometimes this simplest products work the best without using all of these chemicals. We also have 2 dogs and a cat so hair is a issue. Again, bona sells a feather duster type pad that can velcro on the bottom of the same mop and collects hair very nicely. The floor still has a beautiful look to it. I will say that it doest dent and scratch easier than i would like. Hopefully this summer or next we will be putting down a heavy-duty poly coat that will eliminate this problem.

Does anyone here have the oak artisan? I’m wondering if the varigated pattern would help with some of the issues that are posted here. Please let me know how this particular floor works if you have it. Thanks

Same here, we have had the floor installed for almost 2 years, adn now we are getting ready to sell our house and are considering putting a new floor in… this floor is hard to maintain, I for one do not want to be on my knees cleasing every, day, hour…DO NOT BUY THIS FLOOR.
It is pretty but don’t let that fool you…. impossible to make it look nice and clean, no shine is possible… we tried everythig under the sun! And it scratches from everything from moving a box across the floor, to dogs walking on it, and terrible dents, and the edges are chipping off too!
Im thinking a Cork floor is next?
Thanks for reading L

This post is for Jami.
Hi Jami, I read your post dated of 04/04/11. As of today, how is your floor? Do you still have footprints, streaks, or waxes? My floor is a nightmare and it is so exhausting to keep it clean every day and night! I, too, would join a class action lawsuit.
Margaret Smith Pierce says
I too purchased the Thomasville Jatoba Flooring and installed it throughout my entire house. It looked beautiful but has been a pain from the very beginning. I have used nothing except the Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner and the Bona microfiber cleaning pads and it still shows every footprint even when we wear socks. I followed the manufacturers recommendation from the beginning and I have never used any of the products that others have mentioned.
The finish is faulty. I have a professional cleaner come in twice a month and she has never seen any flooring like this one. She is as frustrated with it as I am. I clean my floor almost every day because I can’t stand to see all the prints. I would tell anyone who would listen that they should stay clear of this product. I would deffinitely join in a suit against the manufacturer. Margaret
Felecia says
This was a big mistake “buyer beware” I have the Thomasville Jatoba Flooring. I have called Thomasville at least 5 times about the footprints and smudges on the floor. The floor is horrible. I put 850 sq feet of this mess in my house can you imagine how much i spent on this. Thomasville states that home depot should have told me to use bona x instead of bruce hardwood floor cleaning. They do not want to take responsibility for the poor quality of this flooring. I agree lets get an attorney and file a class action lawsuit.

We have Thomasville flooring and it is the worst decision we have ever made. I am going to contact them direct. Does anyone have a number to them or any contact info? We have the dark cherry wood I think. It scratches when you walk on it with sox on. I’ll tell you what we pulled out cheap fake wood for this real wood and the fake wood was way better so now I’m out 1700 ona project I did not need to do. Please do not buy I will continue to instruct every person I meet not to buy also. If anyone knows their information let me know. I will keep searching too.

No one has mentioned how easily this floor dents and scratches. Bought it for the whole house. Big mistake!!! This floor looks like we roller skate on it. It is just my wife and I with the kids and grandchildren here occasionally. You should see the diggers in the floor from the plastic and rubber wheels from the granchildren’s toys.

Jami says
Just thought I would update my earlier post. We used a diluted degreaser to remove some of our earlier attempts (orange glo, pledge, bona, method, murphys). The footprints you all see are from the buildup that is currently on your floors. Literally we were on our hands and knees for 3 nights. We would spray a section of the floor, then wait for 3 minutes and wipe off with a microfiber cloth. Now that we have previous layers of wax off the floor , we use a white distilled vinegar solution to keep it looking new. It’s a mixture of 1/4 white distilled vinegar mixed with 32oz of distilled water. Hard water can leave deposits on the floor. I can’t stress enough, you need to get the wax build up off before using this solution. Lastly, get a rubbermaid microfiber mob @ Target and mix the solution in the empty container. You can use a Bona system and dump out the bona solution and replace it with a vinegar/water solution. Our beautiful floors look brand new again and it costs significantly less to clean them.

Thank you so much for all the comments. My husband and I were ready to purchase this product. It looked beautiful to me at Home Depot plus with the Thomasville name, 55 year guarantee, and good price I thought “this is great and will look lovely in our home” So thankful I found this site.

Thank you for leaving your comments, what looked great at the store obviously doesn’t on the floor. Saved me a huge mistake.

Hello, I installed my floor back on June 2007 and for the first year it was okay – besides the footprints that everyone else is getting, I was getting them too. Cleaning with Murphy Oil Soup worked for the most part but after a while, you see the streaks. However, earlier this year I found that Orange Glo worked pretty well in detering the footprints for a while. However, don’t use it a second time, now there is a nasty film across it. I can get it off with mild scubbing only to go back to the footprints. I can’t believe for all the money I paid that my floor looks like this. I hope someone does have or know of an attorney because I would like my money back as well. I’m now hesitate of getting another product such as engineered wood floor because of this -maybe carpet is better I don’t know. But Thomasville needs to answer for this bad experiences.
Lara says
I too have been having problems with the Brazilian Cherry wood floor by Thomasville. If anyone has re-finished the floor or has any recommendations on how to re-finish, I would appreciate your help. I do think that the finish is inferior. If anyone is an attorney maybe this could be a class action lawsuit against Thomasville.

I love it….right after I mop, when it is wet and looks clean! But like everyone else has said it is so hard to keep clean. I have said MANY times I wish we could put a polyurethane over it. So if someone tries that please let me know! I love the dark walnut but I hate how it looks on the floor. And I don’t have the money to redo it…I spent $2500 on the floor alone for my living room 🙁 HELP!
Jami says
Hi! We too loved the walnut thomasville floor but as many other have said it has been a nightmare to keep clean. However I think some of the issues might be the cleaners we have used. Many of them seemed to create a wax build up(orange glow, bona, murphy. pledge floor cleaner, method floor). We HAVE had some success taking up the wax with a product called Holy Cow concentrated cleaner..it seems to take away the build up that is causing the majority of the smudges and prints. We follow that up with some Bruce Hardwood cleaner and so far so good. We have just started to try this method so we will have to see how it holds up long term. This summer we plan on putting a heavy duty poly down
Alek says
I have had this floor in various places around my home. I made the mistake of trying to redo the flooring in two phases. Now I’m stuck. My local hd no longer carry this floor. The website is no longer up. The product has been removed from their website. I’m 4 boxes short of completing my job. If anyone sees this floor in their hd on clearance or if anyone has a few extra boxes laying around please let me know!

Has anyone ever tried to rough up the surface and apply a high gloss polyurethane? I am having the exact same issue that each of you described. Its much too hard to keep clean. I am going to experiment in my closet. I was instructed by home depot to rough up the surface with 220 sandpaper and then clean the surface and apply two coats of poly. Honestly, if the floor gets ruined, its not the end of the world, i’ll buy a new one because its not worth the headache. If anyone has experimented with this, I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

I was looking for cleaners for this floor and I’m glad I found this site, albeit a little too late! I thought perhaps I used the wrong cleaners on this floor because I could see how some folks clean it every day. It constantly looks cloudy and footprints…my god if I streak across the bedroom in socks or sans socks it leaves foot prints. I just clean it (a) once a month or (b) when company is coming over and yell at my husband to put on socks to at least minimize the damage. Thankfully the flooring is just in our bedroom and office. i’d be more ticked if it was throughout my entire house! Gorgeous in the store and when you first install it…and then you notice the footprints and then you clean it and 10 minutes later it looks like it needs to be cleaned again…

Thanks for all the comments. I was in HD today and love the color of this floor, but after reading these reviews, I think I will go back to my original thought of putting in a different brand of pre-finished oak flooring. You just save me a BIG headache, and bigger issues with my husband!
Wendy says
Bought this flooring 2 years ago and I’m forcing myself to leave a comment to SAVE anyone that is thinking of buying it. It’s absolutely affecting my daily life. I can NOT keep this floor clean. I wash it sometimes 4 times a week, and it needs it more. You wash it (with Bona like they suggest) and it turns cloudy immediately after and if my kids simply walk across it w/ bare feet just out of the shower – it’s a nightmare. We are talking “Clean” feet messing up a floor. Are you kidding me? I’ve called a few times only to be bounced around and given different solutions which I try for a few months and am back to realizing what a mistake this was. I love the color but the finish is awful. Just awful. It needs a high gloss w/ a nice thick coating. This absolutely rots. I had a professional cleaner in to do my home today and she inspired me to leave this post. She, as a professional, could not believe she was cleaning a floor only to watch it look dirty after each stroke. She was so upset by it. And I will be calling the company again to try to get some answers. I should be refunded for this horrible product, but I know this will not be the case. But I will try. Please Please reconsider if you are thinking of buying this product!!! Look for a better brand name!!

We purchased Thomasville ebony engineered wood floor from Home Depot in December of 2009. Got the floor on clearance, should have seen the red flag right then. Immediately upon installation, noticed how some of the sides and corners of the planks were “chipped”. Called Home Depot, who called Thomasville. Had an oh, so helpful man, who has built many homes in his career, tell me that all I needed to do was get myself a stain stick and touch it up! When I explained that after two weeks, I didn’t think I should have to do this, not to mention, the “chips” didn’t cover….they sent out an inspector. The inspector said it was “site caused.” No mention of what on site has caused it or why boards that weren’t even installed, leftovers in my basement, have the same problem….finally 10 months later, Home Depot has agreed to give me an in store credit for the amount of the flooring. While better than nothing, I think it is deplorable that Thomasville took absolutely no responsibility for the problem. It’s almost like the floor was defective and they put the clear coat over top of the chips….? I would not recommend Thomasville flooring at all.
grant says
I to installed the walnut. I loved it in the store but now regret my decision to purchase. I got it from HD. They recommended to bruces cleaning spray and it still looks like ass. Its cloudy and has started to chip in places. I was told this was a tough, resilient product by our friends at HD. 1500 bucks and 600ft later I still regret my decision. Have I mentioned I regret my decision? Dont buy this crap. No matter how big the sale is. They stopped making it for a reason.

We installed the flooring in our home about a yr and half ago. I called thomasville and they said they would call me back….12 months later and i’m still waiting. I am going to go to my local home depot. This product is defective. You wouldn’t buy, nor would anyone SELL white carpet to people whos feet are made of red wine would they? Whats the differnce. The flooring looks horrible if its even walked on. We have 3 kids and got this flooring thinking it would be easier to keep clean then our previous white carpeting! I was WAAAY WRONG! I clean this floor atleast once a day, sometimes twice! iw ill let you know what results i get, if any!
Dawn says
I agree with you kim. We installed 1200 sq ft of Thomasville Walnut engineered hardwood flooring a year ago, and it has been a thorn in our side ever since. The Walnut finish is beautiful, but will not stay clean. We don’t even have any children. They smear, footprints and shoeprints show. Bona Hardwood Floor spray cleaner (recommended by Thomasville) seems to work best, but still requires cleaning twice a week (daily, if my husband is in his OCD mood). The kitchen (for obvious reasons) is the worst room, so we will eventually end up installing tile.
I wish there was a way to put a protective coat of high gloss polyurethane on the floors, but based on the little research I’ve done, it doesn’t appear so. Does anyone know anything different or have other suggestions.
Thanks.

WE installed the walnut Thomasville Hardwood Flooring about 2 months ago and yes it is beautiful but it is a nightmare to keep clean. Any tips? We clean it deeply about once a week and that still isn’t enough. Love the floor but it isn’t realistic in the main areas of a home. (I.E. living room, kitchen, entry way, etc.)

I too installed a Thomasville engineered hardwood floor (walnut), with not such good results. Every tenth or so time the installer nailed down a board, the finish would chip off of the board behind it. They sent an inspector who called it a manufacturers defect. I waiting to see if they will rip out what has been installed already, or if I have to do that.
