Carpets by Mohawk
When you say carpet, one of the most well known brands is Mohawk. Mohawk is a very respected and is one of the world leaders in the carpet industry mainly due to its high quality products and tenure in the carpet making world. It began way back in 1878.
Mohawk actually acquired several companies in the “buy out†era in the carpet industry. Its top most brand may be the Karastan Carpet line. This is like the best brand that Mohawk has churned out, it is the fillet mignon of the carpet brands. Aside from Karastan, there is Lee’s Carpet, another known manufacturer of high end carpets. Mohawk also partnered with Alexander Smith, it purchased Horizon Carpet in 1992, it acquired Aladdin Carpets in 1994, Galaxy Carpet Mills in 1995, Diamond Carpet Mills in 1997, Bigelow Carpets, World Carpets, WundaWeve Carpet Mills, Durkin Carpets, American Rug Craftsmen, Harbringer, Image Carpet Mills, Helios and Custom Weave.
Although Mohawk carpets are relatively more affordable now, a slight concern for high end carpet brands is that they have a limited are of distribution. Thus, a small amount of retailers actually have Mohawk brand carpets. This makes it somewhat difficult to locate for patterns of brands that you like. Also, since there are lesser retailers, prices are a tad bit higher as retailers rarely think about being competitive in terms of prices as they have a small number of competitors.

my smart strand lasted just at one year. it is now 3 years old, and its almost matted flat and is untwisted. warranty was for 25 years!! multiple claims have been turned down. lowes isn’t doing anything either except offering different material at their cost. i have spent over $5000 on this junk. don’t ever buy Mohawk products..

Three months after purchasing Mohawk Smartstrand from Lowes, my husband and I noticed that it got fuzz marks on the top after vacuuming. The warrantee says not to use a beater bar on frieze’, and I don’t even have a beater bar!
Good news is, we went back to Lowes and told them our story and within a couple of weeks they called and said they would replace our carpet. I ordered the new carpet yesterday (not Mohawk) and paid nothing!
I am very happy and thankful to LOWES, especially after reading what some of you had to go through. I will use Lowes again.

Mike,
I believe you need to re-read the e-mails. Several of them say Smartstrand (we all know that’s not cheap) and several say “high end” or “expensive”. Also, I don’t care what level of expense you go to your carpet should last more then a year or two. No matter where you go on the web the reviews for Mohawk are awful. And who gets to define “legitimate”? The hack that works for the company? And if the stain resistance claims by Mohawk were legit, skin oils wouldn’t cause a problem.
You state that you are an independent and a middleman. Hmmm……..yet you ask if everyone else works for a rival carpet company. Me thinks thou does protest too much.
Glad I have all hardwood.

I’m going to continue to alert people how poor, dysfunctional and unreasonable MOHAWK CARPET and ROMAN FURNITURE truly is… After all this time ( 3 years) my carpets have continued to degrade and you and ROMAN ignore my complaints.I am not going away and I will continue to spread the word about MOHAWK and ROMAN and how they DO NOT stand behind their product !!!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY FROM THESE 2 COMPANIES . If you have a problem they like to blame the customer for it. That is the easy way around your poor install. What a company? Oh, your lawyers do not scare me… because I have my lawyers also …..JUST the beginning. I’LL BE BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coleen Price Caramandi

Hi Everyone,
I am a flooring retailer. I have sold lots of different brands over the years, including Mohawk, Coronet (by Beaulieu), Fabrica (bt Dixie Home), Kraus, and Shaw. They all follow the same rules when determining if a claim is a manufacturing defect, an installation mistake, or just abuse by a consumer.
Not a single person above mentioned the quality of the carpet they purchased. Most didn’t say where the problems were actually happening, or how the cleaning was done. Does everyone work for a rival carpet company?
If you rub a stain, the carpet will go fuzzy, thats why you should have been directed to blot any stains.
No company offers wear warranties on stair and hallways (some underlays will add this warranty, but it is rare).
The lady saying she walks on her carpet with bare feet, gross. Wear socks or slippers, everyone has natural oils on our skin, the carpet is not a great place to leave it behind.
Oh, and in my 12 years of being the middleman between suppliers and customers, I have never seen a large company turn down a legitimate warranty claim.
So, follow the care and maintnance book and don’t abuse your carpet and it will last as long as it is designed to.

I had a slightly different experience with Mohawk in that I purchased a very expensive Karastan area rug. Karastan was acquired by Mohawk in 1993. I was not aware of this when I purchased my rug.
My grandmother purchased Karastan area rugs in 1948 and these rugs were still in use in my brothers house in 2010. I felt I was purchasing the same quality when I bought my rugs. What a mistake. Our rug was down on our living room floor for only eight months when we noticed tufts of wool coming out of the rug. At first I thought this was because the rug was new and shedding loose wool. The living room is never used and vacuumed on a regular basis. At the nine month mark we had a an area of aprox. ten inches where the wool had come out completely. If you looked on the back side of the rug you could see that the wool was gone.
We contacted Karastan/Mohawk. I knew when I purchased my rug it had a lifetime warranty. When I spoke to Mohawk I was told that warranty was with the retailer and not with Mohawk. I was shocked. At no time during my purchase was I advised of this. Who gives a warranty through a retailer? It makes no sense. I can understand that a carpet installer could be held responsible for a poor installation job but I had no installation. The rug was shipped to our home and we put it down. Why then would the retailer be responsible in any way for a product they did not manufacture? If I were to purchase a refrigerator from Sears and it failed I surely would not expect Sears to be responsible. It makes no sense at all. To me this means Mohawk can manufacture any quality product they choose and sell it as a high end, quality product with on responsibility at all.
I went through all the same nonsense mentioned by others. It took months to reach a resolution because the retailer we purchased from went out of business. I believe this was the only reason Mohawk replaced our rug.
Be warned! Any flooring store can be gone overnight leaving you a very bad position. Best to never do business with any carpet name that is owned by Mohawk.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. You have saved me money and grief since I was close to purchasing high end Mohawk. I don’t understand why Mohawk would treat customers this way in this age of internet reviews.

My experience with Mohawk will sound like the rest. I replaced home carpet after 15 years only because it was out-dated, not worn or soiled. I was suckered into Mohawk’s smartstrand 2 years ago. Carpet in in high traffic areas, LR, BR, stairs, hallway. We have no children, no pets, always take off our shoes and vacuum regularly. Within 9 months, smartstrand was looking soiled. Salesman offered cleaning after a year. Mohawk claims steam cleaning is all that is needed to return this carpet to new appearance. They ran steamer over areas several times and blamed the dirty look on a shadow. I made a claim with the store, they sent to to Mohawk. Mohawk made me pay for another cleaning by a different company. It has now been cleaned 3 times with NO results. Carpet looks soiled, almost black and awful. They sent an inspector who agreed it was soiled but wanted to blame it on everything but the carpet. He took a while rag and repeatedly rubbed areas until the rag looked dirty, although the carpet appearance never changed. Mohawk denied my claim because dirt was transferred to the rag, so it must not be the carpet. What a joke and an insult. SMARTSTRAND CARPET IS JUNK. Mohawk DOES NOT honor their warranty. I got a reply that they are sorry I am disatisfied with the carpet. I just want to inform others and hope you will listen and don’t throw away your hard-earned money, like I did.

We purchased expensive Mohawk carpeting for the house two years ago, at a cost of nearly $10,000. It has matted and looks like it’s 20 years old. When the store filed a complaint in our behalf, Mohawk sent their own “inspector” out to “inspect” it and make a recommendation, and then they refused to honor the 25-year warranty on this matted mess. The “inspector” lied to me about what he was doing and saying, and wrote a report saying we had never cleaned the upstairs carpeting — although I’d told him we’d had all of the carpeting professionally cleaned. Their warranty apparently is merely a marketing ploy. We are simply out all of that money, and the carpet looks awful. I feel sick, truly sick. We may as well have just gone to some fly-by-night carpet joint and bought some cheap carpet.

I had Mohawk carpeting installed less than a year ago. It gets very little traffic since it’s in the master bedroom and guest room only, and I live alone. After about a month, I noticed it was “fuzzing” on top. I thought it was just because it was new carpet and it would go away. It just kept getting worse to the point where you can’t even see the pattern. The local carpet retailer inspected it and agree it was defective. Long story short, after Mohawk’s “independent” inspector found no defect (blamed my dog, blamed the vaccum cleaner I had had for two weeks, etc., etc.) they refused any responsibility. It’s only two bedrooms and would have cost them next to nothing to replace and would have earned them lots of good will points. Thankfully, the local retailer is going to replace it free of charge. Don’t buy Mohawk!
Dorene says
We purchased the better grade Mohawk carpeting from a local store and spent over $3,000. IN a year and a half with only two people living in the home it is worn, discolored in large areas. We contacted the local distributor where we purchased and had installed the carpeting and had to almost threaten court before they would come out and take a look. They then took pictures and sent them to Mohawk. We were informed that the carpeting was dirty (they justified this decision by looking at a photograph) and that we just needed to get it cleaned and they were not responsible. The local distributor sent out a carpet cleaner and we never heard back from them again.

I purchases a brand new home in June of 09 with Mohawk carpet. In fall of 09, we noticed the matting, flatness, fuzziness of our hight traffic areas. Inspector of carpet store came out…stated nothing was wrong. The problem maybe that I don’t wear socks and the oils from my feet are crushing the fibers!! We we moved in, I had no pets, no smoking and 2 very small children. We NEVER wear our shoes in the house and I bought a brand new Dyson sweeper.
Once spring came, other traffic areas were getting worse. Called the customer service at the carpet store, she recommended getting it cleaned before anyone would come back out and look at it. Did that looks the same. I have recently found out that the carpet is polyester!! Please google “problems with polyester carpet”. You will get many results! It is awful carpet and is not durable by any means. http://www.capetsupersite.com/Carpet_Q&A_Page7.htm
This website was very helpful with learning more about polyester carpet and what you can do. I have not had a resolution with my situation yet and it will probably me a long road:(

I purchased a Mohawk berber carpet 6 months ago and it looks awful. There is fuzzing over the entire carpet and pilling in areas where there is more traffic. The local independant company that installed it sent a rep to look at it and blamed it on my sweeper! A $500 Oreck, which I might add, I sweep all the carpet in my house with and have no problems. They sent the info to Mohawk but still no response. I had Stainmaster carpet which was 11 years old and basically still looked brand new which I got rid of because the color didn’t match my livingroom when I purchased new furniture. I’ll never buy Mohawk carpet again, it’s garbage and it appears from the other comments on this site I’ll probably never have this problem solved successfully. So much for warranties.
Susan says
Wow, thanks so much for your reviews. You just made my decision must easier. I will NOT be purchasing Mohawk thanks to you all.

Mohawk carpet was installed in my new house in May of 2009. The carpet is falling apart and unraveling. The carpet has seperated from the backing. A sample was sent to Mohawk and they said the carpet was defective. Mohawk won’t do anything other than replace it with the junk we already have.
Theresa McKenney says
My carpet has been installed maybe nine mos. when vacuuming a tuft cam up and caused a 6″ unraveled strip.I had an independent inspector come and when I receiv ed his report, there were discrepancies. #1 was the rip in the carpet caused by a tuft coming up. #2 I never cut any raised tufts indicated in the report, I would be afraid that would cause more rips and #3 I have had the carpet at least nine mos. when it unraveled. I did express a concern about the color difference along the seam at the top of the landing, but that was not my main concern. Bottom line, Mohawk will not do anything for me, saying it’s the installers fault. It is not, it’s the fault of the product. You must has taken a page out of BP and put the blame on someone else. I didn’t cause the seam to rip, it was the installer. Sorry, it’s the fault of your product. Rollins is replacing my carpet and I can assure you, it is not a
Mohawk. At least Rollins knows the meaning of customer service, you don’t.

We purchased Mohawk carpet exactly one year ago. Within 2 months we complained to the local distributor and installer (Capet One). We were concerned about the amount of pilling we were experiencing and odd patterns where the carpet was matted showing a clearly visible patch. They explained there was nothing they could do about it and contacted Mohawk. Mohawk sent out an “independent” carpet inspector who found nothing wrong with the carpet in the 2 minutes he was there. The patches we pointed out we not visible to the inspector and everything else was “normal”. Here we are one year later with the carpet still pilling and matting. We had purchased cheap carpets in our old home with low expectations. We paid a lot of money for this Mohawk carpet and expected better results. What made it worse is no help from our local supplier and Mohawk.

I am working with the local dealer where I purchased the Mowhawk carpet for our bedroom 17 months ago. I have had a salesman from Mowhawk, the inspector from the local company and the owner of the local company come to the house. They all agree that the carpet is wearing poorly (Traffic patterns and foot hoes where we stand at a sink). However, we were turned down twice for a claim. Why have a warranty? Our warranty was for 20 years! The carpet didn’t stand up for 14 months before it looked worn out. If there is a class action suit being filed, I’d like to be a part of it.

We purchased Mohawk carpet and after a year had our tan carpet turned red in areas near the seams. When we called our dealer it took a year for someone to come and look at it, then they replaced a section, but the other 80 yards have since changed to a tinted red in areas near the seams. Mohawk will not replace it because we discovered after the three year limit. We didn’t wait, it just took them that long to respond. Now they just ignore us! DO NOT BUY MOHWAK CARPET!!!

We purchased Mohawk Carpet and also had the matting after less than 2 years. I will never purchase Mohawk again as they do not stand behind their product. They sent out 2 “indepent inspectors” and also got the same story about it meeting standards. Its junk, looks awful and my only advice to anyone is to STAY AWAY FROM MOHWAK CARPET. Their Customer Service is worthless and so is their product.

We have a HUGE problem with Mowhawk carpet installed by a local company in Santa Barbara CA. The manufacturer, Mohawk, and their “personally contracted”, “independent inspector” says it “meets standards”. It has frayed and come apart 30 places in 6 months in just 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and a hall!
The retailer is going to eat it in court, and the manufacturer will get away with a smile.

I purchased mohawk carpet from Independent Paint and Flooring in Mankato MN almost 2 years ago. I contacted them in November 2007 that is was matted. Turns out it had pile reversal. Solutia made the yarn, which Mohawk said should carry the warranty. Solutia said everything was covered except pile reversal. Mohawk said they were not responsible. Independent Paint and Flooring wanted me to pay $1800.00 for new carpet. I finally got that price down. We had to pick out a different Mohawk carpet, they do not make Wyndham anymore ( I wonder why). They installed Mohawk carpet now 3 different times and will need to do again. The new stuff has been smooth in some areas and is very frizzy in others. The installer even called for them to reorder, when he saw the discolorations and different textures. I would not purchase Mohawk again, you can get just as good of quality and I know better service from somewhere else, especially do not go to Independent Paint and Flooring in Mankato, Minnesota.
